Geography
Geography at Wootton Primary School
Intent
Aims of our Geography curriculum:
- Provide a broad and balanced Geography curriculum which develops pupil’s understanding and knowledge of where they live, beginning with their immediate locality and widening this to other regions of the United Kingdom and the wider world.
- Develop children’s curiosity and fascination of the world and it’s people.
- Equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the earth’s key physical and human processes.
- Develop pupil’s geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways.
Implement
Geography starts in the Early Years with children describing their environment and exploring similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries. We then implement a curriculum that is based on the National Curriculum and is progressive throughout the whole school. Through revisiting and consolidating skills, our curriculum helps children build on prior knowledge alongside introducing new skills and knowledge. All children expand on their skills in local knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, geographical skills and fieldwork. Children have a range of opportunities to experience geography through practical engaging tasks beyond the classroom. We record Geography work in the classroom in our curriculum books through written work, drawings photographs, visits and drama.
Impact
Children at Wootton Primary School are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for high school and for life as an adult in the wider world. All children will be able to use geographical vocabulary accurately and understand the different strands of geography, with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Evidence of strong outcomes for all can be seen through observations of high quality teaching, pupil conferencing and planning folders. We ensure that all pupils are included and are challenged to be the best they can be through ensuring that, where possible, experiences are class-based to ensure access for all. We use Pupil Premium funding when needed for the children to learn on an individual basis when requested.
