Implementation
A history journey begins in the Early Years with pupils talking about familiar situations in the past and discussing some similarities and differences between things in the past and now, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class. As children move through Key Stage 1 and 2, our History topics start with a key enquiry question and use subsequent key questions or statements to promote curiosity from pupils and a desire to discover more about the past. Pupils across the school are given the opportunity to collect information in interesting and varied ways. They are given opportunities to make sense of their ideas, draw their own conclusions, refine their understanding and present their findings. The history curriculum is enriched by many first-hand experiences to engage pupils and bring the past to life. All pupils are supported to become resilient and respectful learners through historical discussion or debates which value the opinions of all pupils and build on each other’s ideas and thinking. We ensure lessons are pitched to meet the learning needs of all our pupils.
Impact
Our history curriculum will ensure that children at Wootton Primary School have secure historical knowledge and skills and the ability to ask perceptive questions. It will also ensure that children have a strong understanding of historical vocabulary. Evidence of strong outcomes for all can be seen through observations of high-quality teaching, monitoring and pupil conferencing. We ensure that all pupils are included and are challenged to be the best they can be. We use Pupil Premium funding when needed for children to learn on an individual basis when requested.
