RE
RE at Wootton Primary School
Intent
The purpose of RE at Wootton Primary School is to support the development of our children’s own values and contribute to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. This enables children to interpret and respond to a variety of concepts, beliefs and practices within religions and to their own and others cultural and life experiences.
Linked to our school values -Respect, Empowerment, Aspiration and Perseverance (REAP), RE teaching at Wootton Community Primary School encourages pupils to engage with real-world issues and themes, understanding and respecting diversity. It empowers pupils to make up their own ideas and emotions clearly.
Implementation
RE plays a very important part in our broad, balanced and coherent curriculum to which all pupils are entitled to. At Wootton our curriculum for RE aims to ensure that pupils have opportunities to understand a range of religions and worldviews, express insights about the nature, significance and impact of worldviews and to develop the skills needed to engage with religions and worldviews. This is demonstrated through a variety of teaching techniques such as drama, art, discussion, use of artefacts, stories, pictures, periods of stillness and reflection.
Where possible we want our pupils to have opportunities to encounter local faith communities through visits to local places of worship or visits from members of local faith communities.
RE at Wootton Community Primary School is taught in accordance with the legal requirements of the Agreed Syllabus for Hampshire, Living Differences IV
The principal aims of RE are:
- To enable children to consider the effects religion has on people’s lives.
- To encourage and develop children’s interest and opinions about simple concepts that are common to themselves and religions, and recognize and express their own values and beliefs,
- To provide a wide range of encounters with religion which will help them form a view of the world that they can apply to their own experiences.
Impact:
Evidence of our outcomes for all can be shown through pupil’s comments and discussions, our monitoring, reporting and tracking. Much of our evidence is through photos and evaluations at the end of an RE topic. We ensure that all pupils are included and are challenged to be the best they can be through ensuring that, where possible, experiences are class-based to ensure access for all. We use Pupil Premium funding when needed for children to learn on an individual basis when requested.
